Dumb Dumb Dumb

This is by far the DUMBEST movie I have ever seen. EVER! Yes, it has taken me this long to see it. It was funny - very funny at times. But, it was so incredibly DUMB! I just kept praying that my boys wouldn't turn out like anyone in the movie! I also kept imagining my brother, sister, cousin, and nephews laughing their heads off during this movie - quoting every line! What kind of sick family are we? GOSH!

Actually, it took a LOT of sick families to make "Dumb and Dumber" such a popular movie.

I thought the tidbit about the Shitzu/Bulldog cross was quite clever! (hardy-har-har!!)

I guess that puts me in the category of SICK!!

Dumb?

I think the word you are searching for is Brilliant. From the stirring sign interpretation to the courageous, inspiring dance routine - from the existential exploration of the common man, to the connectivity of seemingly random events – not to mention the impossibility of certainty - this film has set the standard for cinema in the 21st century. That, and tater tots are just funny. It’s Brilliant!

Well, I didn't say it wasn't funny! It's just dumb! Was there a plot? At least Raising Arizona has a storyline!

Were there moments you felt sorry for those guys? Were you disturbed by the way they were treated at school? Did the uncle give you the creeps? Maybe I'm too BLUE to see past those aspects and just enjoy the movie.

But, I found myself laughing at them too. The funniest part for me was the uncle throwing the steak and hitting ND in the face!

I agree, agree, agree! The majority of the watching experience was equivelent to hours of enduring the scratching of chalkboards. But, go figure, the teens and even my twenty-something single step-daughter loved love this movie?

No plot? Excuse me? Did it not all come together for you when Pedro smiles, knowing he just won the election after ND's breakthrough performance? It all made perfect sense to me. In fact, the song that plays in the background after the dance is called Music For a Found Harmonium. Deep.

The funniest parts are the subtle ones. When Pedro approaches the mic and says "Hello", when Kip and Napoleon's fight is interrupted by the doorbell, Kip's fist-pumping "Yesss" during padded bowling, Deb's photography techniques, Pedro crossing the road with the cake he built, Rex-Quan-Do.

JRR - how many times have you watched the movie?

That's a personal question and is out of line. My purpose here is to discuss the merits of the film.

This is your basic underdog movie...what do you mean it has no plot? Napoleon rises above the taunting of fellow classmates to come to the aid of a friend in need. He is not held back by the ridicule of the more "popular" kids in his podunk town. He shows amazing strength and confidence by getting on that stage and dancing his little heart out - most teens wouldn't be caught dead doing such a thing - especially just for a friend. He is a modern day hero...and I tip my hat to him.

Thank you Napoleon, for teaching us what it means to be true to yourself.

This movie also set a new standard for fashion...I mean who knew that moon boots, sideways ponytails and lanyards would ever be back in style!

Come on Aunt Jill!! At least I'm glad you are keeping up with the times. And with it being dumb.....(You should have seen Adam dress up as N.D. for Halloween one year!!) I think that speaks for itself.

By-the-way...the above comment (white) was left by me...(kati)

Love ya

Kati - thanks for clearing that up, I was quite confused by "White" calling me Aunt Jill!! I bet Adam was hilarious.

I'm not debating that the movie is funny. It is very funny! My point is that it is DUMB! So is Raising Arizona - that's part of what makes it so funny. Funny with an undertone of SAD! We laughed and laughed, "rewound" and laughed again. But poignant, revolutionary, life-changing - I'm not convinced.

OH, so dumb!!! I might have found much more humor in it had I not had preconceived ideas of what to expect. I had not heard of the movie and it came "highly recommended" by someone and so I had much loftier expectations. Oh, what it could have been had I just expected it to be DUMB! As the credits were rolling, I was still sitting stupefied waiting for the "good part". I think that may have been the funniest part to me. All that said, it was much funnier once I heard friends quoting parts of the movie, so I think I should probably see it again . . . Imagine something so DUMB being so "successful"!
