Obsessions

D is OBSESSED with Star Wars!!!!! Because he has recently been granted the privilege of seeing the first (or is it the 4th?) episode - you know, the one from the 70's - and he has the Lego Star Wars PS2 game, he can think of nothing but Star Wars! He's home from school today, so I get to hear all about it. AAAAAAHHHHHHH! He's eating lunch right now wearing not one, but two lightsabers - although I think he calls them lightsavers!

So, surely there is a name for this rite of passage into Star Wars mania - right? And what is the treatment for this irritating condition that I have as the one in the house without any desire to watch the movie. I didn't like it in the 70's and I don’t think there’s much of a chance I’ll become a fan anytime soon.

D’s not the only one in the house with an obsession though. Little Brother can’t get enough Blue’s Clues. I have no problem with this. It’s so innocent. There’s no violence. Blue doesn’t attack Magenta. She doesn’t bite Green Puppy when he knocks her blocks down. Mr. Salt doesn’t try to harm Mrs. Pepper. It’s good clean fun! I can live with his obsession!

So what do I do? There should be a formal name for this condition. And, what’s the treatment?

I don't see a problem here. Except that the little dude should be drop-kicking Blue across the room at some point.

I just thought this was called "being a boy". Play fighting, throwing balls, drop-kicking...watching those boring Sci-Fi movies...just being a boy.

I actually found Star Wars to be much more entertaining watching it with the boy. He talked about watching it for a LONG while, so we finally screened it for him and decided "why not". We have since rented the "Empire" and one of the new ones. I regretted the new one - "Sith" something. It was VERY gross and graphic. However, he moved on and is no longer obsessed with talking about them . . .

By the way, just in case clarity is ever needed . . . He seems to think he's seen a movie just because he's seen a 30 second commercial about it. Amazingly he can tell you LOTS of details about a movie after a 30 second trailer . . . can be pretty believable! HOWEVER, just because he can recite several instances from the "Ricky Bobby" movie does NOT mean he has seen it. He was obsessed with that one, too, for a while. Being a "Nascar" family of sorts (job hazard . . .), we (Dad) decided we (Mom & Dad) should go see it in the theater. BIG MISTAKE. Please don't make the mistake yourself. Spare yourselves the agony of contributing to the trash out of your wallet or precious time (not that you were thinking it, but just on this "boys will be boys" thing and if car racing ever became an interest . . .) Anyway . . . May the force be with you . . .

Oh, by the way, Dad would argue the "innocence" of the "funny" guys on the Blues Clues show . . . he's quick to offer his opinion, but as a music major I tend to keep a more open mind . . .

Ok people. You will never understand Star Wars with this approach. This is not rocket science. (Well, maybe it is.) You can't just watch "the one from the '70s" and then "Empire" and then "Sith something". There is an important story being told with these films. You must watch them in order. And by "order" I mean Episode 4, 5, 6, and then 1, 2, and 3.

And by the way, since I'm 37 years old, sitting at work, defending the Star Wars saga on a blog, apparently you don't grow out of it.

I agree with W, aka Mr. Beaver. The guys on those kids shows oog me out. I actually think it's another subversive effort to strip away masculinity from society. I read alot of Eldredge, by the way.

And while we're on that subject (and this actually ties into Joyful Journey's post in a way) I'd like to recommend 2 books about raising boys. Raising a Modern Day Knight and The Way of the Wild Heart. If you don't have 'em, get 'em.

I guess Kacole can wait to see which gender the twins are first.
